Where is Sampaloc? Cartographic Reflections At the Edges of Spanish and American Colonial Manila

Where is Sampaloc? This paper attempts to answer this question primarily from the use of selected cartographic details taken from historical maps produced during the Spanish and early American colonial period (dated from 1779 to 1903). Specifically, this paper explores the possible reasons why the Franciscan friars chose a particular spot in Sampaloc to build their convent in 1613 and how this area developed as a center of Filipino Franciscan lay spirituality and grew as a parish at the edge or outskirts of Manila. The change in Sampaloc’s boundary brought about by the armed collision of the Spanish and American colonial powers (1898-1903) will be discussed especially in terms of Sampalocs’ role in the Spanish defensive plan for the city of Manila. Finally, this paper will show how the so called “Primo de Rivera Line” was used by the Americans to change the boundary of Sampaloc and Manila.

The paper is a history of fires in Parian that aims to show how fire management helped preserve social order in the capital city. Period architectures in Parian were analyzed through a historical-adaptation approach, a "unique means of examining the human-environment interchange," as introduced by Bankoff (2003, p. 163). The approach looked into how period architecture evolved in response to the interplay of environmental, political, socioeconomic, and cultural factors. Flood Risk of Metro Manila Barangays: A GIS Based Risk Assessment Using Multi-Criteria Techniques

This study examined the flood prone areas within Metro Manila to find out their degrees of disaster risk. More specifically, the study considered the population densities of Metro Manila barangays, the smallest political units of the country, the gender and age population, the structural materials and the recorded depths of flooding. Geographic Information System (GIS) using multi-criteria techniques was the tool of analysis of the study. Projecting the population density of each barangay, the children, elderly and women populations to 2020 and 2030 and simultaneously examining the recorded depths of its flood waters and existing structural materials, the study identified the barangays that will be at high risk by 2020 and 2030. Although the study is limited to population data and physical characteristics of barangays, the findings may be useful to urban and regional planners and government agencies involved in disaster risk reduction and mitigation management.
